Tasks Assignment

The First Officer - Navigation is a Bridge Watchkeeper as required by the Bridge Operations Manual (BOM) and Bridge Resource Management (BRM), according to ship’s posted schedule. While on watch, the Officer reports directly to the Master, or to Staff Captain as conditions require.

Watchkeeping Responsibilities:

Be familiar with and have a thorough knowledge of the Navigation Policy and Procedures manual, relevant SMS content, nautical publications, be competent in the use of industry standard nautical technology and exercise good Bridge Resource Management and skills at all times;

Be fully aware of and always follow Company and Master’s standing orders;

Remain continuously vigilant whether at sea or in port, maintaining safety and security awareness and a good liaison with other vessel departments, in particular the Engine Control Room, at all times;

In charge of safety and security of vessel, including but not limited to residents / crew figures onboard/ashore, access to vessel and bridge, lights flags and shapes, security of lifeboats and other objects especially in bad weather, shell doors, watertight doors, tender platforms, gangways and opening/closing of decks in bad weather, mooring arrangements and the status of the lines at all times in port;

Fully aware of all works requiring a work permit, monitoring their status and making sure the work permits are properly closed at the completion of the job

Take charge of Tendering Service, monitoring residents and crew movement, assuring a smooth flow movement, and giving permission for the tender move. Report immediately to Staff Captain / Safety Officer or Master any issues and concerns

Taking care of the ship’s stability as instructed by the Staff Captain, keeping the ship upright, communicating with the ECR and recording any operation for Potable Water Technical and Ballast Water; monitoring ship’s activities (fresh water bunkering, loading/offloading provisions, luggage, materials, waste etc)

Monitoring ship’s mooring, and surroundings of the vessel, focusing on the weather changes; frequent communication with the gangway personnel, ensuring the safe set-up of the gangway and use of the most convenient access (shell doors) to the ship, in accordance with the tides and height of the pier

Demonstrate good leadership in matters of occupational health, safety, security, environmental awareness and quality standards, and effectively supervise any ratings assigned to their watch or maintenance duties;

Passing of all relevant and necessary information to following watch, including but not limited to relevant port and/or navigational information, decks open/closed status, shell door conditions, recreational water facilities, and any other important activities ongoing onboard (e.g. bunkering, permits to work, garbage, loading, embarkation).

The First Officer Navigation is the ship’s designated Voyage Planning Officer and is accountable to the Master for the appraisal, planning, execution and monitoring of all current and future voyages, as per passage planning procedures;

Has to review the itinerary well in advance, creating the routes accordingly and report any concerns (such of high required speed between ports) in order for the itinerary to be adjusted in due time if necessary.

Responsible for preparing and delivering the Itinerary / Voyage Briefing or delegating another Deck Officer, under his guidance, before starting a cruise segment

Overall responsibility for coordinating all Charts, Nav Warnings, Notices to Mariners, T&P’s, Publications, Sailing Directions and ECDIS; Maintain up to date ship’s library, ensuring we have the latest editions on board, and complete inventory a/p requirements. Requests for local charts if there is no ECDIS coverage.

The First Officer must keep the Master informed of the navigational progress of the voyage, weather forecast and they keep the Master informed of all other matters relevant to the navigation of the ship;

In liaison with the Chief Security Officer – to create a “Gangway / Shell Door Planner” (by cruise segments or at least weekly)


The First Officer Navigation Officer is the Bridge Manager, responsible for correct implementation of the standards of Bridge Procedures, Watch Keeping, and Bridge administrative related tasks, reporting any deficiencies to the Staff Captain and to the Master;

Responsible for the operational reliability of all instruments used for navigation and any other Bridge equipment, working in close cooperation with the Chief Electrician and ETO and report any defects directly to the Master without fail; keep updated Bridge Equipment Status report and forward it to the Master on a regular base; maintain Service Reports for the Bridge equipment

Coordinating and maintaining the Deck Log Book and Official Log Books. Ensure the log books are properly filled in and in due time by all responsible Officers. Maintain the inventory of the all the log books and ensure a sufficient stock is kept on board at all times. Creates the purchasing order before the stock is minimal.

Ensure all the posters, notes and signage required to be on the Bridge are placed accordingly and kept in good condition. Ensuring the Bridge is kept clean, organized and tidy at all the times, being accountable for this aspect

In charge of the pyrotechnics inventory, keeping it in safe condition, issuing purchase orders before expiry.

Keeps the flags inventory, ordering in due time any missing flag according with the intended itinerary; ensure the flags are correctly hoisted during his watch; maintain in good condition (cleanliness) all the flags

Understudying the Safety Officer, being ready to step up as a Safety Officer if conditions require.


This is an outline of the First Officer’s role and responsibilities, which may require performance of other duties at the discretion of the Master and Company when required.
