The UK government has announced a £55.7 million grant to expand the port of Cromarty Firth in Scotland, making it the first port in the country capable of manufacturing floating offshore wind turbines on-site and at scale..
The project was financed by the Floating Wind Energy Manufacturing Investment Programme (FLOWMIS). The investment will enable the port to attract more private financing turning it into a floating wind energy integration centre.
The expansion project is scheduled to begin soon and the port is expected to be fully operational by 2028. The project will create approximately 320 jobs during the construction phase.
Once fully developed the Cromarty Firth port is expected to provide up to 1,000 highly skilled jobs, including in construction, installation, shipbuilding, crane operation and marine management.
The funding is part of the Government's 'Plan for Change' aimed at accelerating the rollout of clean energy infrastructure, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and reducing consumers' energy bills.
The United Kingdom is already a world leader in floating offshore wind farms and this funding will make the Cromarty Firth a key player in offshore wind technology.
