Northern Lights: First Shipment of Liquefied CO₂ to Underground Storage

On June 11, 2025, the first cargo of liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO₂) was successfully delivered from the specialized vessel Northern Pioneer (7,500 m³, built 2024) to the Northern Lights terminal in Øygarden, Norway. This represents one of the most significant milestones in launching the Longship project.

Northern Pioneer is a unique vessel in its class, equipped with a dual-fuel engine, rotor sails (wind-assisted), and an air lubrication system.
Its carbon footprint is approximately 34% lower compared to conventional vessels.

The ship loaded in Brevik (Heidelberg Materials facility) last week. In the first phase, the project is designed for 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, with a minimum volume of 5 million tonnes planned for the second phase starting in 2028.

The transportation chain works as follows:

CO₂ liquefaction at plants — Heidelberg in Brevik and Hafslund Celsio in Oslo.
⛴ LCO₂ transportation aboard the Northern Pioneer to Øygarden.
Discharge via a 110 km pipeline into underground storage at a depth of approximately 2,600 meters in the North Sea.
