Free Wi-Fi on Ships in Port Hedland to Improve Seafarers' Experience

Pilbara Ports has launched a new program aimed at improving the working conditions of seafarers by providing free Wi-Fi access on all ships in Port Hedland.

The ship Wi-Fi support program aims to replace the current practice of topping up individual SIM cards with a more modern and universal solution for internet access.

Instead of each crew member needing their own data plan, the new system will provide full vessel internet access via a mobile Wi-Fi system.

This change means that all crew members on board participating ships will be able to connect to the internet helping them keep in touch with family and friends.

Vessels wishing to participate in the program can purchase a Ship Wi-Fi Pack, which includes a mobile Wi-Fi router with a Telstra SIM card and a Mesh Wi-Fi Extender. Once installed on board, the Port Hedland Seafarers Centre will manage remote data top-ups while the vessel is in port or at anchor.

Pilbara Ports says the initiative is a step towards recognising the contribution of seafarers and meeting their needs as they help sustain global trade.

The port authority is calling on all ships calling at Port Hedland to take part in the program and help to provide seafarers with greater access to communications that support their wellbeing.
