The Engineer of the Watch is Engine Room responsible for the safe engine operation during his watch and reports to his superior when encountering malfunctions our doubtful situations. He is responsible for the operation and monitoring of all machinery in the engine room and machinery spaces as directed by the Chief Engineer/Staff Chief Engineer. He is responsible for the maintenance and repairs in his assigned area as per Staff Chief Engineers/Chief engineer’s instructions. He is responsible to supervise, all crewmembers assigned to work in the engine room and machinery spaces and ensure that work is carried out in a safe manner. Any machinery defects or abnormalities found should be reported to the Staff Chief Engineer/Chief Engineer.


He shall take measures to prevent pollution from engine or machinery spaces operations.


He is responsible for:


The careful handling of all equipment and machinery in his/her area of responsibility; Reporting to his Superior all accidents, near misses, deviations from operational routines and recommendation for improvements which have a bearing on safety, security and environmental protection. This includes corrective measures for health and hygiene implementation.


The Engineer Officer has the authority to issue instructions to other members of staff on watch duty.
