The IMO Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC 12, January 19–23, 2026) has approved amendments to the 2011 Enhanced Survey Programme Code and remote inspection regulations. These updated procedures will directly affect survey requirements for vessels worldwide.
The sub-committee also agreed on draft amendments covering:
-
Means of access for inspections;
-
Safe return to port clarifications;
-
Evacuation following fire or flooding;
-
Amendments to the 2009 Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODU) Code;
-
Updated guidelines for fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) elements in ship structures.
In a separate decision, the experience-building phase for underwater ship noise has been extended by two years—through 2028.
Working groups have also been established to develop safety requirements for lithium-ion batteries as primary power sources and standards for alarm management in machinery control rooms.
