Itochu Corporation to Build World's First Ammonia Bunkering Vessel

Japanese trading giant Itochu Corporation has contracted the construction of the world's first ammonia bunkering vessel — a 5,000 cubic meter capacity ship that will start operations in September 2027, flying the Singapore flag in the world's busiest bunkering hub.
Sasaki Shipbuilding in Japan will construct the vessel, while Izumi Steel Works will supply the cryogenic ammonia storage tanks. Itochu's Singapore-based subsidiary, which specializes in alternative marine fuels, will handle day-to-day operations.
As an early market entrant, Itochu plans to establish a dominant position throughout the supply chain — from producing and transporting green ammonia to delivering fuel directly to ships at major ports.
This initiative supports Itochu's broader strategy to develop global green ammonia infrastructure, encompassing distribution hubs, maritime technologies, and involvement in international regulatory frameworks. The company is already working closely with Japanese shipyards, classification societies, and fuel suppliers on ammonia-powered vessel development.
The ship will play a key role in Singapore's ammonia bunkering demonstration project, with teams preparing for live bunkering operations as soon as construction wraps up.
