Norway Plans Shipping Tunnel

Norway is planning to build the world's first full-size shipping tunnel. Six international contractors are battling for the contract.
The 1.7-kilometer Stad Shipping Tunnel, which runs through the Stad Peninsula, will provide ships with a safe route through the treacherous Stadhavet Sea known for its dangerous currents and rough weather.
 
The shipping tunnel will connect Moldefjord and Kjodepollen in Vanylvsfjord passing through the narrowest part of the peninsula. It will be 50 meters high and 36 meters wide.
 
The main goal of the project is to improve safety at sea as the Stadhavet Sea is one of the most dangerous in Norway.
 
Over the past 80 years 33 people have died in maritime accidents in this area. Unpredictable currents, strong winds and frequent storms make navigation difficult.
 
One of the most difficult engineering challenges will be building the tunnel openings which will be as tall as the tunnel itself – seven times higher than a standard road tunnel. If all goes according to plan, the contract will be awarded in the fall of 2025 with construction starting in early 2026.
 
After the completion of construction the Stad Tunnel will be a historic breakthrough in marine engineering, providing safer and more efficient navigation for ships sailing along the Norwegian coast.
